You are standing within an active kūtai (green-lipped mussel) restoration area in Tinopai.

Tinopai Resource Management Unit and the community are working to restore traditional mussel beds and rebuild the health of our moana.

Restoring kūtai is about restoring balance. Healthy kūtai beds:

• Filter and clean the water

• Stabilise the seabed

• Support fish and marine life (biodiversity)

• Rebuild traditional food sources (mahinga kai)

• Provide a Cultural connection

This is a legacy for our mokopuna.
